Margazhi Special Workshop in Chennai on Dec 21, 2014

Hello all,

I am totally excited to announce the Margazhi Special Workshop that will happen in Chennai on Dec 21(Sunday), 2014.

Margazhi Season is a month and half long feast for Classical Music lovers, where people come from around the world to Chennai December to mid January to soak themselves in Carnatic music performances happening around the city. Over a thousand concerts happen in this season in Chennai alone!

Many years ago, when I was a student and lived in a Gurukulam in Chennai, I attended many concerts – on an average, a concert a day on most evenings, and many more during the Margazhi Season. The experience was an eye opener, and with childlike innocence, I explored hundreds of concerts, developing a stronger familiarity with the Carnatic music scene, understanding the structure of the performances and realizing the importance of Carnatic Music in the global music scene.

This Margazhi Music Season, From Mug to Mike intends to give you a glimpse into this fascinating world of music, presenting you a day of specially designed course of activities.

We will have a special workshop in the morning, followed by a couple of concerts in the evening.

The workshop

This workshop will start with my talk, followed by our special guest lecture and a recording(only voice).

Special Guest Lecture
As a part of this special workshop, From Mug to Mike is inviting Dr K Krishnakumar, who will speak to the participants on Carnatic music, for about an hour, followed by a brief Q&A session.
Dr. K Krishnakumar is a Carnatic Vocal Musician, Music Composer, Playback Singer, Music Educationalist, Musicologist with Ph.D in Indian Music.
He is the prime student of Padmavibhushan Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, and has been giving his Guruji vocal support for many of his recent concerts.
He is the winner of many prestigious awards the latest ones being the title ‘Kalashri’ with the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award 2012, Aasthana Vidwan, and many others.

Concerts
After some serious learning and recording in the studio, we will treat ourselves to 2 amazing concerts happening  at the Global Music Heritage in Thiruvanmayur in the evening.
The concerts are a Veena performance by Rajhesh Vaidhya and another vocal concert by Padma Bhushan TV Shankaranarayan.

Rajhesh Vaidhya is a leading veena player, who is especially known for his innovative fusion albums and concerts. He is also a film music director and has composed various albums and given many stage performances.

He has also worked with Vidyasagar, Harris Jayaraj, Bharathwaj, Deva, Devi SriPrasad, Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman. He has performed with musicians and composers like Sir Elton John.

Padmabhushan TV Sankaranarayan is an eminent and popular Carnatic vocalist (South Indian classical singer), known for his vibrant music that essentially stems from the style of his late uncle-guru, the legend Madurai Mani Iyer.
TV Sankaranarayanan, also a winner of the Sangeetha Kalanidhi award instituted by the Madras Music Academy and many others, is particularly noted for the easy reach of his voice to the upper notes and colorful delineation of the Swaraprastaram ( solfège ).
